Design Process
For gardens and landscapes of all sizes
My design process is flexible and can be tailored to your needs. Most projects follow the stages outlined below.
1. Initial Consultation
An initial meeting with you to understand your hopes and vision for the project, the location and any relevant history/heritage, and to understand the challenges and potential of the site.
It may be necessary to consider the need for third party specialist suppliers, contractors or consultants. We’ll discuss your timescales and budget.
This meeting is followed up with a written brief for the project, along with proposed timescales and a fee estimate.
2. Site Analysis & Design Concept
Once the design brief is agreed, I will carry out a detailed site analysis, including making visual records of the site and doing a site survey including existing landforms, trees, buildings, structures and utilities. For larger gardens, professional site surveys are commissioned.
I will then work in my studio on the design concept for the garden. Once the design concept is developed I will present some 3D visuals/ initial sketches/moodboards to you, so that we can discuss the overall vision for your garden.
Following feedback from you, I allow for one round of changes to the initial design concepts.
3. Masterplan & Planting Plans
Once approved, I will work up the initial design ideas to Masterplan so that you have a complete vision of your garden through plans and illustrations as well as detailed planting plans.
I will provide construction and setting out drawings as required for the tender and construction process.
4. Tendering & Costing
I carry out the following (as required by the project):
Identify potential third-party contractors and suppliers, obtain quotations and manage the tendering process.
Advance the procurement of the plants.
Review quotations and timescales with you.
5. Construction & Planting
I oversee the construction stage to ensure quality of construction and adherence to the original design intent
Site visits at mutually agreed times to inspect the status of works.
Provide snagging list to the contractor.
Laying out plants, planting myself (if required) and mulching as necessary.
6. Aftercare & Maintenance
Once the project is complete, I can provide a garden maintenance schedule for you.
I’m always keen to revisit and review the garden and can give further advice on garden maintenance, as required.
