Evolving with the seasons

‘Haven’ in Autumn 2023

We are delighted that Southbank Centre have extended the life of ‘Haven’ so that it can regrow and bloom again next spring/ summer.  Seasonal changes are very much part of the work and the strong silhouettes of the seedheads of wildflowers are what the sculptures were initially drawn from.

The meadow is now in its dormant stage where the plants are drying out and have produced seedheads. By delaying the cutting of the meadow until spring we leave food in the form of seeds, for the birds over winter and habitat for insects that hibernate in the hollow stems. Often considered weeds, many of these plants provide valuable food and shelter for native wildlife.

Thank you Southbank Centre for having us again in mid-October, we had a lot of fun accessing the roof top to maintain and add to the meadow. We look forward to documenting the meadow each season to show how this live installation grows and changes.

Haven is a collaborative project between artists Denman & Gould and myself, it was commissioned by Southbank Centre with thanks to the project Curators Cedar Lewisohn and Mark Healy. We are very grateful for sponsorship-in-kind from Wildflowerturf.
